For position measurement indoors where GPS is not available, conventionally a three-point measurement using Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) is widely used. As an alternative technology, Hosiden has developed a Bluetooth low energy type multi-antenna module which enables directional detection using AoA (Angle of Arrival), released in Bluetooth 5.1.
The module incorporates six antennas, each of which receives radio waves and calculates the angle-of-arrival based on phase differences using an exclusive Hosiden algorithm. By eliminating erroneous detection due to multipath components and minimizing noise, the antenna array enables stable detection of the communicating party direction whether it is stationary or moving, covering a range of ±75° from the front side of the module.
A UART interface is included to control the module. Using this interface, Bluetooth connection and detection processes can be started or stopped from external host devices.
