Sheet-type Distributed Temperature Sensor

Sheet-type Distributed Temperature Sensor

[Overview and Design Intentions]

Recently, we have seen an increasing number of IoT sensors being introduced and utilized in various situations - in households, factories, and infrastructure, mainly due to increased demand for labor cost savings and safety management. To contribute to the further development of this IoT world, Hosiden is engaged in the development of a variety IoT sensors.

Electrical equipment or devices commonly generate excess heat just before they fail or malfunction. In particular, if the equipment utilizes high currents, then this can possibly cause fire during failure. The usual measures for managing fire risk generally include periodic patrols and inspections. It is, however, difficult to visually assess whether some equipment or device is in an abnormally heated condition, and the utilization of tools such as temperature sensors or thermal image viewers are needed for the identification of any anomalies.

On the other hand, general temperature sensors such as thermistors can measure the temperature only in an area close to the sensor. When using these sensors, there is a potential risk of overlooking trouble or delayed detection of abnormal heat generation, if the sensing is localized at too great a distance from the overheating area. Especially for thermal imaging viewers, a manager needs to check and measure selected locations for monitoring. Therein lies challenges in securing human resources, incurred personnel costs, and the difficulties of maintaining constant monitoring.

To solve these problems, Hosiden has developed a sheet-type distributed temperature sensor that can measure temperatures at multiple points. Our sensor’s structure, in which a number of temperature detection electrodes and thermoelectric conversion materials are stacked on a film, is unique. It enables acquisition of temperature distribution data of a desired target object. Because the sensor is formed as a thin sheet, it is easily customized for attachment or installation in a confined space, allowing the sensor to be utilized in a wide variety of applications.

To further expand the product applications, we are now offering PoC samples for demonstration experiments. This is an IoT sensor module which combines a control circuit and a communication module for continuous monitoring and reporting of distributed temperatures.
