Although Bluetooth Classic has SPP (Serial Port Profile) that can be used for versatile data transmission, Bluetooth Low Energy does not have such a profile. This is an important consideration for engineers developing products that use the Bluetooth Low Energy module.
Bearing this in mind, Hosiden has developed a Bluetooth LE module which integrates software that enables serial communication. Connecting the external MCU (Micro Controller Unit) via a UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter*1), this module can send/receive arbitrary data with a communicating device. As it supports both Central and Peripheral function modes, it can be used for communication not only with smartphones (or PCs) but also between any products with the module integrated into them. In the Central mode, up to 8 peripheral devices can be connected at the same time.
This module has been developed with the concept of being “Easy to Use.” By sending no more than three UART commands from the external MCU to the module, transmission of serial data is possible with the communicating device. On the other hand, for better communication flexibility, more than 60 types of UART commands from the external MCU are recognized, with which customization according to applications, such as increased speed of throughput can be realized. Furthermore, this module is equipped with a mechanism to prevent unexpected and un-commanded connections between devices. This works to avoid products in the marketplace using the same module but for dissimilar applications, finding themselves unexpectedly connected. A beacon sending/receiving mode is also built-in so that a product with this module embedded can take the roles of iBeacon or Eddystone beacon formats.
Two types of the module are available; The HRM1079 and the HRM1062 equipped with a high performance antenna. In the Bluetooth market which is ever-expanding, this module is a solution to fast-track a customer’s idea to commercial launch.
