Multi-purpose Millimeter-wave Sensor

[Overview and Design Intentions]

 Hosiden has been offering distance measuring sensors using the 60GHz waveband since 2023, achieving sales of over 40,000 customized units tailored for various applications. For further possible applications, we have a newly proposed sample of a millimeter-wave distance measurement sensor with added versatility.
For this design, we have bundled into a neat package a set of peripheral hardware devices, such as control circuits, wireless communication interfaces, battery power, and the necessary internal firmware, all inside a durable waterproof housing. Easy handling helps with smooth product offering to system integrators and service providers.

The sensor mounting selection depends on the application where customization is often required, so we designed a flexible means of mounting the module. Users can freely decide to mount via to the top or the bottom surface of the sensor, which contributes to minimizing initial costs. The functions and the size of the product are also optimized so connection to cloud servers requires a separate Gateway terminal, and this is connected via Bluetooth®LE.

When necessary, we can specifically develop a dedicated Gateway terminal that allows conversion to the interface of the customer’s desire.

With excellent resistance to external disturbances, sensors using 60GHz millimeter-waves can continuously detect objects with less influence from scratches, dust, water droplets, dirt, or other external noise when compared to the sensors utilizing other ranging systems as optical, ultrasonic, or pressure. This advantage enables stable sensing in harsh environments such as outdoors exposed to the elements, or dusty locations, as well as factory dust and oil smoke. Also, the unit’s low power consumption allows battery operation, facilitating easy and secure outdoor installation without power supply cabling. As this millimeter-wave sensor can penetrate resin-based obstructions, it can detect liquid levels inside a tank through its resin lid. This allows the sensor to be securely and stably used in applications requiring hygienic control such as foods, or monitoring of volatile liquids. Explosion-proof versions of the product will soon be available, too.

 Other suitable applications include the following: detection of remaining liquid levels in tanks in plant or infrastructure equipment, monitoring of water level of culverts or gutters, and water level monitoring on farmland fields. Also, as the sensor does not require a transparent window which is mandatory in laser or optical-based sensors, there are many applications requiring discrete, privacy-conscious human presence detection such as in public toilets or offices, hotels, and restaurants.
